A 3-days JAVA course was held in the University of Eindhoven October 17, 20 and 21, 1997. It was primarily geared at mathematically oriented people. For those who intend to present interactive mathematical applications on the net, this has been an ideal way to acquire enough expertise to start writing JAVA code. The principal instructors were André Heck and Leendert van Gastel of the CAN Expertise Center, Amsterdam (The Netherlands) and Maylis Delest of the University of Bordeaux (France).
Apart from a basic introduction in the object-oriented language Java, much attention has been paid to connect applets or other Java programs to mathematical software. Especially the team from Bordeaux has quite a lot of experience in this. Their system CaliCo, which interfaces to several mathematical programs, is now being rewritten in Java.
